The Upside Down Kingdom – Part 9 – Persecution

Following Jesus doesn’t always mean going with the flow. In the Upside Down Kingdom, living according to God’s ways can put us at odds with the world around us. Jesus makes it clear that those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake are blessed—not because suffering is something to seek, but because of who they belong to and the hope they have in Him.

Throughout the Beatitudes, we’ve been discovering that Jesus calls His followers to a different way of living. The values of His Kingdom often look very different from the values of the world. And when we choose to live faithfully, we shouldn’t be surprised when others misunderstand, challenge, or oppose us.

Persecution is an expected consequence of godliness, but persecution isn’t the purpose of godliness. Faithfulness to Jesus is.

So how do we respond when following Jesus becomes difficult? How do we remain gracious when we are misunderstood, stand firm when our faith is challenged, and keep loving others when they don’t share our convictions? Scripture gives us encouragement and direction for navigating those moments with humility, courage, and hope.

We don’t follow Jesus to be persecuted; we follow Jesus because He is worthy. And when opposition comes, we can remember that our hope is not found in the approval of the world, but in the promises of Christ. Jesus calls His people to rejoice—not because hardship is easy, but because our reward and our future are secure in Him.
